To My fellow washers - well done on making it to the end and adding your own ideas and experiments to our 2015 project. I have enjoyed it thoroughly... but please wait a year or two before you decide to do this again. :)

To our readers who followed our sometimes erratic journeys with paint, thanks for sticking with us - I hope you have been inspired to put brush to paper.

To our contributors: thanks for rising to the monthly challenge when we didn't have the time to.It was great to see how you interpreted the challenges.

Finally, having posted the alphabet since August, I thought it would be cool to show you the big picture:
Thank you all for joining in this year long blog I hope it has been informative and interesting to you.
I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part and so pleased with how it has helped me in my own endeavors.

Each end of year I create a painting just for printing Christmas cards for family and friends and this year I incorporated tissue collage of carols with my watercolour painted Aussie Critters.

Wishing fellow watercolourists a wonderful Christmas time and a brilliant painting year in 2016.

In South Africa, Amarylis bulbs flower in December. A glorious big red blossom is a fantastic alternative to traditional Christmas flowers. The blossoms are big, bright and dramatic.

Paper: Saunders Waterford HP

I decided to use two colours - from opposite sides of the colour wheel:

Perylene Maroon and Perylene Green.

Using these I was able to get some rich darks for the centre of the blossom and the detail on the bud. Using my two bristle length brush I pulled the wet pigment downward when it was partially dry to create a shadowy texture below the flowers.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.

Hi dear watercolor friends,

this is one more painting without any drawing and over all with accepting of accidents and take it as a gift. So I create with it a background around the head.

The Challenge was to paint a pheasant in Winter. He likes puffs his feathers and pushes himself near to the ground to keep warm. In this year I've painted a lot on this particular watercolor paper format. I found it very inspiring to think about, what could be looking fine on it.

I enjoyed creating the letter as an almost negative shape. I did this because I felt the bird was painterly enough and that to put colour in the letter would detract from the whole.

This is my second to last post in this year long blog challenge. My very last post will be my Christmas wishes to you so from me this is in fact my last "wash"post.
The year has been filled with so many art challenges for me and having this blog has kept me on the path of always trying something new whether it be colour, texture, subject, paper, brushes or application. I hope you too have discovered "new to you" watercolour tips and techniques.
I share today a riverscape which even though I live on the edge of a beautiful river these types of works elude me and I think it is because I have not found my way of competing with the real beauty I see everyday.
Maybe this will be a 2016 challenge for me.
I was able to let loose with this painting as my art commitments for the year have all been met so it is now playing time with no pressure.
I have used a very limited palette of Indigo, Raw Sienna and Bloodstone Genuine.
Below shows how the graulating Bloodstone is ideal for mood and interest.
The Challenge was working loose, without any drawing, creating high mountains, deep snow, a great scenery with less colors. This is a warm up for a larger version. I love first sketches on Bockingford Fatpads paper very much. This was the first wash and I decided to add more darkness behind the mountains. It creates more depth and more light - as you can see at the top.

The nights before and on the night of Nov. 11, children walk in processions carrying lanterns, which they made in school, and sing Martin songs. Usually, the walk starts at a church and goes to a public square. A man on horseback dressed like St. Martin accompanies the children. When they reach the square, Martin’s bonfire is lit and Martin’s pretzels are distributed.[3]

In some regions of Germany (e.g. Rhineland or Bergisches Land) in a separate procession the children also go from house to house with their lanterns, sing songs and get candy in return.

The origin of the procession of lanterns is unclear. To some, it is a substitute for the St. Martin bonfire, which is still lit in a few cities and villages throughout Europe. It formerly symbolized the light that holiness brings to the darkness, just as St. Martin brought hope to the poor through his good deeds. Even though the tradition of the large, crackling fire is gradually being lost, the procession of lanterns is still practiced.

During my childhood, we often went at the late autumn afternoon with our lanterns through the streets and sang. In Germany there are many songs which are specially composed and have been written in ancient times. One of them is "Laterne, Laterne"
My recent practice has been to select colours to make interesting backgrounds for my subjects. I am finding painting the subject the easiest in my works but much thought goes into the background where a story might still be needed through colour, texture and patterns.
Using little studies as above is perfect for painting the same subject but finding something unique for each work. Above are two different colour selections. The painting below is using the top selection.
I used quite a few techniques from the monthly challenges with this fellow. Masking fluid (May) for the spots. Toothbrush splattering (March) to emphasize his spottiness and a dark shade (June) made up of two other colours.
Sometimes starting with an intended quick study leads to a finished painting. This happened with my antique brass tap. I went straight in with Raw Sienna on the paper no drawing. After adding shading I was really pleased with it so immediately thought of continuing and composing a proper painting. I added the little Fairy Blue Wren (with a pencil outline) and then painted the background washes after the subjects were dry, using colours in the washes that had been used in the subject.
The colour on the tube looks soft and pale but in its full strength it is more warm and darker. I decided to warm up before getting to work on a real painting with some little rose exercises using this Rose Dore along with Quinacridone Magenta, Rose Madder Genuine and Permanent Rose.
I love Roses but for me a pleasing painting is not always achieved.. I have painted a few rose watercolours that I am happy with but not every one is a success.
I tighten up at the mere thought of painting roses but this does not seem to happen with any other bloom. I didn't do a rose painting after these little warm ups so here I add my most recent rose painting which pleased me, painted at the Fabio Cembranelli workshop I attended a few weeks ago.
