U is for Usimbiru Barbet

I used quite a few techniques from the monthly challenges with this fellow. Masking fluid (May) for the spots. Toothbrush splattering (March) to emphasize his spottiness and a dark shade (June) made up of two other colours.

Colours used: Viridian and Alazarin dark combo, Cadmium yellow light, Indian red.

O is for OWL - pearl-spotted owl

Masking fluid used with a sepia wash, Yellow bits are quinacridone gold.

And because I am trying to cram everything in before the end of the year, there is V for Vulture (Lappet-faced vulture)

 

Masking fluid with burnt umber and sepia. The face was painted in a bit of Antwerp blue and Permanent rose.

We all are looking forward to the summer. This year I will travel to the South of France in September and I can't wait to feel the beautiful southern atmosphere. Palms, the gorgeous blue sea and warm tones of the terracottas-colored roofs. So I have  painted a longing image  ...

The darkest accents in this painting I create with MAYAN DARK BLUE and the two brown tones.

Vandy Massey - Week #19

Drawing gum takes practice. I hated working with it when I first started. Somehow it always came out in big blobs and looked messy.

I thought it was time to revisit an old theme that was painstaking and tortured last time I tried it.

The intention was to make the cobweb really fine. First challenge is to be able to see where these fine lines are drawn - not always easy.

Second one is to be spontaneous and free with the lines. Spider webs, particularly when they have been in use for a while, are seldom perfectly formed.

First wash: Daniel Smith Green Gold, Winsor & Newton Sap Green, Winsor and Newton Olive Green, FUB, Winsor Violet, Opera Rose.

At my photos you can see, that I have used a grid to put the masking fluid onto the paper. 

Those grids are available with round  or rectangular holes . We can use it for windows or other structures.

Paper is Arches grain fin 300g,

colours are from Sennelier and Schmincke.

Lori Bentley Week #20

Also covering the monthly challenge for May - painting with masking fluid/drawing gum.

I have created this piece for a charity auction called "A celebration of Painted Wolves" which will raise funds for highly endangered wild dogs.

I started with a pencil sketch and, using a toothbrush, flicked the masking fluid across the dog to form the white patches on the dog's coat (they are famous for each having a different pattern of patches in white, golden brown and dark brown). For the grass I used the tooth brush directly on the paper.

Next I blocked out the dog with a sepia wash in very wet paper.

Golden ochre added to the dog and more sepia to define the form. Olive added into the grass.

Fun masking fluid challenge from Maggie

Here I have masked out a border design and painted some loose blended washes right over the masking fluid to create an interesting lively colour/design. 

I think these have turned out cute, and lend themselves to adding motivational words in the centre such as Faith, Hope or Love.... or an entire motivational quotation written in ink or stamped with alphabet stamps.

 It’s always a joy to play and have fun with watercolour techniques.

1. step with Masquepen 

This is the first year I've planted Icelandic Poppies in my Garden. These are beautiful and daily surprising plants. Every day there are blossoms appearing in  a new color. The vast and yet so delicate blossoms reminds me of ballerinas and I could paint them again and again. 
For Olivia's monthly Challenge I use a fine pen with drawing gum for the contours. Then I make my washes wet in wet on this really heavy and marvelous paper.

La rosée sur la  toile d’araignée :

1 dessiner très précisément une portion de toile d’araignée

2 recouvrir les gouttes de rosée et quelques fils avec le DG. Laisser sécher

3 mouiller la feuille , la peindre avec différentes couleurs vives ,laisser fuser :la toile sera nette et les fleurs et feuilles floues derrière .Laisser sécher .

4 Enlever le DG

5 cerner avec du gris de payne les gouttes de rosée et rajouter au centre de chacune un point de couleur assorti au fond
