Lori Bentley Week #24

Black headed Jay
This bird was presented as a challenge to a facebook group I belong to called "paint colourful birds for fun". It was started and administered by Gerard Hendricks who is an amazing watercolourist. I was intrigued by the checkboard pattern on the wings, which I failed to depict very accurately because by then I was involved in getting the black colour without using black. I used Viridian and Alazarin Crimson to create a very dark grey and helped it along with a tough of indigo over the top.

The light purplish grey on the back was achieved by mixing Cobalt violet light with Cobalt turquoise light.
